Fishing for a Cure (FFC Juvenile Diabetes)

We are a group of concerned parents, grandparents, and friends of juvenile diabetics hoping to raise awareness and money for juvenile diabetes research and work toward a cure for this disease.  We have all seen firsthand the difficulties and struggles our children face each day as they attempt to manage their diabetes and live their lives as normally as possible.

Juvenile diabetes, also called Type 1 diabetes, occurs when the pancreas stops producing the hormone, insulin, which enables the body to get energy from food. Type 1 diabetes usually strikes in childhood, although it may also develop in adulthood. Type 1 diabetics are insulin dependent for life and require multiple insulin injections and finger-prick blood glucose monitoring several times a day. A person with Type 1 diabetes must constantly try to balance insulin and food intake to reduce the risk of life-threatening complications.

A group of families in this area (Reedsburg, Wisconsin) who have been affected by Type 1 diabetes are trying to raise awareness and money for juvenile diabetes research and work toward a cure for this disease. They are sponsoring Fishing for a Cure, a juvenile diabetes fundraiser, on Saturday, August 4th, 2007 at Huey Duck Lake, Reedsburg Rd., Reedsburg. The event will consist of a K.C. chicken barbecue (adults $10.00, children $5.00), games, raffles, and a silent auction. Also, meet Casey FitzRandolph, gold medal Olympic speed skater. Activities begin at noon, and food is served from 2:00 to 5:00. Proceeds from this event will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the world’s largest voluntary funder of diabetes research whose focus is finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
